definition of microsphere, cenosphere, hollow glass microsphere
Microsphere is referred to as the tiny little balls with diameter less than 2mm. It comes with solid and hollow. Sun Microsphere Company makes hollow microspheres only.
In this site, when we mention microspheres, it means hollow.
Microsphere is magical product. It has enormous functions due to the shape being sphereical, chemical containing alumina and surface being smooth and non-porous. there are a wide variety of microsphere service different applications.

Cenospheres, also referred to as hollow ceramic microspheres, is a non-porous, inert, hollow, alumina-silicate, micro balls that is formed by burning of pulverized coal during power generation process. cenosphere is separated by water from PFA. which is usually disposed through pipelines from power facility to a reservoir about 20km away. Cenospheres is a part of PFA accounting 1% of its volume.
Hollow glass microsphere is a type of manufactured industrial microsphere product. it is born to overcome the disadvantages of cenospheres in consistency of color, density and crush strength.
Hollow glass microsphere
Hollow glass microspheres are made of silica glass and other inorganic mineral products. it is hollow spherical, non-porous. It looks almost white in naked eye. It weighs lighter in density, compared with cenospheres. It's also stronger in compressive strength than cenospehres. and yet it has better consistency in quality than cenospheres.
cenosphere collecting site
For decades, water has been the major way of transporting PFA to a final settling reservior about 20km away from the power station, making collecting of cenospheres possible.
In some power stations, cenospheres can also be harvested at the thickening tanks built inside a power facilities.
The tiny little balls become useful functional fillers after a series of process such as collecting, drying, classification by size, density, color, etc., and in some cases special treatment to reduce biological activities such as fungi/yeast or bacteria.
processing into useful products
below photo gallery indicates microscopic view of cenosphere products produced by sun microsphere. Total effective particle size ranges from 5 to 600 microns. common procedure is that feedstocks from different sources are primarily sorted by density, color, size, etc and then blended and classified into useful product of clients' requirement.
